my achilles was detached---cleaned out--and sutured back in a special fashion---the no weight bearing for 3 weeks---and elevation---were key. very little swelling--then i slowly walked better each day----now--6 weeks out---limping small amount---been on bike since off crutches at 3 weeks--started eliptical at 5.5 weeks. no pain---in fact the machines help with stretching and range of motion---I REALLY WANT TO AVOID SURGERY ON OTHER ONE---THAT ONE IS NOT SWOLLEN AT all---the bump-bony projection is seen on exray--and with naked eye---but not any where like the bad one was....WHAT HAVE PEOPLE DONE TO AVOID EXXACERBATION? just avoid rubbing--up hill running---?

That's encouraging! Hopefully, I'll actually get to exercise next week on the bike. I have never gone this long without exercising, since...well, never.

Hey, I am getting my cast off next week and will be in one of those cam walker things. Are there any exercise machines I could use at this point, like the stair master? Thanks!

I am 1 week out of surgery today. Perhaps I have been a bit premature - I moved a cupboard yesterday, organised all my kids new xmas stuff and cleaned a floor of the house (vacuuming etc) and last night my ankle was SORE! I guess I had it down too much. It's also not working 100% to have the pressure bandage off, which is what I did yesterday and which led to really immense swelling (with my skin peeling), so since last night I have a tubigrip which has helped a lot.

The incision is almost completely healed, but peculiarly the pain from the swelling is worse than the pain I had directly after the surgery. I am revising my plans to be driving by next Tuesday and we cancelled our New Year's plans (which included driving 9 hours from Holland to the UK via France).

Did anyone else have a lot of swelling come up so late after the surgery?

The inflamed bursae were drained as far as I know. I have the dressing off now and because I didn't keep off my foot as much as I could have I have some really awesome looking bruising all along the side of my foot and about three quarters of the way up my ankle. I'm suffering a bit from swelling too, but I think that's because I'm not keeping it up that much. Today I am walking without crutches.

I had the pressure bandage off but the swelling quickly builds up if I leave it off for too long. The incision is about 3 inches on the side of my heel so there will be no pressure from shoes later on. I'm really impressed with my dr as I think he's done a great job. The heel already resembles the other and the ridiculous lump is completely gone. I'm hoping to be driving by the end of next week!

Ash,

See Rob's post back in July 2008. Not having Achilles detachment is a key driver in recovery time. In some situations, the amount of excess bone buildup will require achilles detachment (vs. debridement). In most cases this will requires the use of screws to reattach.
Were inflammed bursae removed or just drained?
Best of luck on a speedy recovery, it sounds like you're well on your way.

Hi Renee, I think the key was that they put nothing IN only took bone out - or at least that's what the orthopedics resident was explaining to the nurse. She said if they had had to put anything into my foot the recovery would be different.

I can tell you what scared me though - when I got to the hospital none of the staff on my ward had ever heard of this surgery before and they'd all looked it up on the internet! Luckily my dr had more experience. I have been doing stuff today so there is some swelling now, but am about to go and rest it!

WOW, Ash! I'm amazed at your speedy prognosis! I'm so glad that it's going well for you. I was thinking about my experience and trying to determine what was different and if the aftercare had anything to do with where I am now. I don't know if the fact that I also had an osteotomy was significant - they took a wedge out of my heel bone and screwed it back together to change the angle of the bone. My foot was swollen and black and blue for weeks after the surgery. There was no way that I could have put any weight on it. I needed sleeping and pain medication for several weeks. It is still stiff and painful at times. I'm happy for you that your recovery is so much quicker. Have a very merry Christmas!
